Daily Life: Making a meal

Minenhle Majola, 13, does schoolwork at her home in Matshesi Village, outside the town of Estcourt, in KwaZulu-Natal Province in South Africa. She is a participant in a UNICEF-organized child photography workshop and a student at Lyndhurst Primary School in Estcourt. Her grandmother cooks at the stove behind her. Minenhle lives with her grandmother and ten other family members. Her mother works in a faraway town and visits twice a week; her father died many years ago. “I enjoy school,” said Minenhle, although her walk to school takes two hours each way. “I know that if I want to be a journalist in the future that I must study hard.”

Edeline Jean (age 7), on the foundation of her new school.

Since the 2010 earthquake in Haiti destroyed Edeline Jean’s school, she has attended classes in a semi-enclosed makeshift structure on the school grounds. “I have to walk a lot to get to school, but it is not too difficult,” she said. UNICEF is currently building an earthquake- and hurricane-resistant school for her and approximately 400 other children, in North Department.

In Case of Emergency: Youth Map Obstacles to Reaching Safe Points:

Example of a youth report from a recent mapping workshop in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. One of the categories of risks the youth developed was “obstacles to reaching safe points”, thinking in a night-time emergency such as flooding, all walk ways and stairs must be cleared to avoid injury. On March 7th, 2012, the youth presented their reports to the local Rio government and discussed the best ways to work together and realize change.

Youth Leaders and Government Collaborate to Map for Community Change:

A Program to Create Safer Environments

During the first UNICEF GIS digital mapping training in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a young community leader and government official learn how to capture reports of environmental hazards using a mobile phone. Five youth leaders were trained in August 2011, and each went on to train over twenty adolescents in their community, resulting in 111 empowered youth mappers reporting community risks and hazards. This UNICEF program builds a bridge that allows young people to deliver critical community information to their government. The youth in the most recent UNICEF GIS training in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil were educated on environmental hazards and flooding risks. When then they went into the community to investigate and report with their UNICEF GIS mobile apps, many came back with a realization. They had walked by heaps of garbage every day but never saw it as a problem partly because they did not know how they might take action on fixing it. Now they are using their UNICEF GIS reports to advocate for community clean-ups and collections. The idea for using youth led digital mapping to create safer communities started with UNICEF in 2009. Working with local partners in Africa, young people used an innovative mapping technology to mark HIV and AIDS risk points in their community. After completing a training in digital mapping with UNICEF GIS, a mobile and web application, this young person has plenty to smile about. He is one of 111 youth mappers that are working with community leaders and UNICEF to build safer neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His group is the first to be part of this exciting new mapping program.

A Program to Create Safer Environments

The above image of the “UGA-UGA” bridge was part of a UNICEF GIS report taken by a youth during a December 2011 workshop. Using this report, adolescents and community leaders in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil were able to advocate for the repair of the bridge which was frequently used by children going to school. In February 2012 the government recieved the message and the bridge was fixed.
